Lets Set A Fall Alfresco Table….

September 9, 2020 by Michele

Fall is here, its time to enjoy the cooler evenings…why not move the table outside!

How I set a cozy Fall table on my porch…

Here in Alabama, summer seems to last…and last…and then linger a bit longer… but, something magical starts to happen in September–the nights begin to cool down and you know that a break from the heat is around the corner. This week it happened! We’ve gotten our first taste of the 60’s overnight, and just like that- my thoughts turn to all the things I love about Fall! I’m ready to take full advantage… So come along with me as I start a series of posts celebrating the beauty of Autumn, bid goodbye to humidity, and say hello to cozy….

The First Order Of Business…

First order of business-move the table outside to the porch, set the table and let’s have dinner alfresco….

Setting A Fall Table 2020/ Setting The Mood & A Collected Table/My Simple Southern Slant

Don’t Be Afraid To Mix In A Little “High” & “Low”…

When you start to set your table, don’t be afraid to mix a little “high” and “low” together. A collected table is more interesting and sets a relaxed mood. I encourage you to choose your favorite color and gather up items in that scheme- that way you will use them over and over, mixing and matching, playing with patterns and textures…

For my table, I mixed some antique fine china that I purchased at a consignment shop with simple, modern, clear glassware. I incorporated a fun, patterned cloth napkin and a simple round textured place mat. A few inherited sterling silver forks and spoons added to the special feel of the evening without seeming fussy or formal.

Use Candles For A Cozy Setting…

I think candles are a must on any table, especially when you want to create a cozy setting. The best way to protect the flame from breezes and accidental toppling is to use a hurricane. These two are my favorites for a casual feel. I use them every day on my coffee table and kitchen island. I also enjoy votive candles for extra brilliance- it’s fun to tuck them in for a little flicker here and there.

Setting A Fall Table 2020/Natural Elements/My Simple Southern Slant

The Centerpiece…

99.9% of the time, I use natural materials for my centerpiece. My family already knows what to expect…dried, colored leaves, sweet gum balls, acorns, small pine cones, tree bark or branches from my yard mix well with small bunches of flowers I pick up from the grocery store. One of my go-to choices for a Fall table is natural deer antlers- I just love how you can nestle votive candles and small trinkets among them! Think about what you would naturally find in the woods if you took a walk…that’s what I’m all about!

Here, I used a chinoiserie jar full of dried, blue hydrangeas from my garden. It was already arranged, and paired well with my deer antlers…

To further punctuate the casual feel of my alfresco dinner, I put our place mats side by side using one of the corners of the table instead of placing them across from one another. Doing that made dinner conversation feel more cozy, and I was able to setup the table decor in the opposite corner. This made the small, square table feel much larger. If you have a larger outdoor table, don’t be afraid to throw a cloth or even a seasonal throw across a corner of your table and set your places on it. Just because the table is large doesn’t mean you have to use the entire surface!

Final Thoughts…

Just remember, no matter the occasion or what’s on the menu, get outside and enjoy the change of season. I hope I have inspired you to do just that! Don’t be afraid to play around with what you have on hand… Use your dishes and your linens- what’s the point in having them if you just keep them packed away? The joy is in the fellowship, so don’t stress the small stuff. Use your imagination and let me hear from you. Feel free to leave your ideas in the comments…
